The History Bit.
DI Recording Studios is owned and run by Glenn, (thats me on the left performing at the now (relatively) famous Oakstock at the Royal Oak in Brampton). I've dreamt of owning a studio ever since I saw someone operating the now legendary Fairlight CMI in a studio complex on tv when I was only fourteen. (Right, that's the techno babble out of the way with… I needed to get it out of my system before you come into the studio. It's the last you'll hear… unless, of course, you insist). I was fascinated by the skills and talent of the production team and vowed that someday, I'd have a studio of my own. Now xx amount of years on: here it is!!
I started writing music aged 15, on an old organ owned by my dad but, frustrated with its preset sounds, I decided that the way forward was to buy myself a synth. And so I did... out of a catalogue! A Jen sx1000 monosynth; (which might not mean a lot to you but, believe me: it meant the world to me, at the time). I later sold it for more than I paid for it, several years on, (Entrepreneurial, even then…).
Owning my first synth allowed me to join the first of several bands I've been in over the years. Some of which were good… and some: truly bad. Im gonna miss out boring you about the next ten years because I would need a whole book on the subject, but generally; it involves buying loads of keyboards, studio gear, beer, writing songs… more keyboards, more gear, more beer, even more songs… and erm… all the things that go with it. I think you get the picture.
I suppose my first 'studio' job was when my gear was all set up in a house I used to rent in Chesterfield. I was asked to do an original track for a friend who was entering a body-building competition. He wanted a dramatic piece to walk onto the stage and do his poses to. The track had the desired effect and before I knew it: word had spread like wildfire. I was inundated with requests to do all manner of tracks for different things.
This, in turn lead to doing backing tracks, upon request, for all manner of acts. I still do them occasionally, but I found that it took up too much of my time and cut into my songwriting time so I just more or less stopped. Saying that, though, I'm really glad I did them because without the production of those early tracks and the learning curve it took me on: my production skills would not be at the standard that they are now. (That isn't intended to be a boast but you learn so much when you're forced to play the drums, bass, keyboards, guitars, put on backing vocals and mix the music too). I learned exactly how and when to apply effects, and how songs are structured and produced. How certain instruments are more prominent in one style than in another, and it's given me all of the experience that's going to make you leave my studio with a product that you can be proud of.
The Bit About The Studio.
The studio, built in chesterfield, is now my living. It is the result of over 20 years of ambition and determination. In the three years it's been running: it's gone from strength to strength and I've learnt more in these past three years than I ever expected. As well as having a number of my own songs published: I've produced music for several up and coming artistes in the area. A lot of my work also includes other songwriters wanting their music brought to life from maybe a few chords on a keyboard or a sung melody line.
Whichever category you are in and whatever style of music you do, I I'm confident that I can help you get the best out of your music using the knowledge and experience that I've gained over the past 20 years, or so.
I love my job. It's what I live for and I believe that it shows in my work.
I can turn your ideas and your dreams into a reality.
The studio is comfortable. The atmosphere is relaxed and the whole experience is fun (though I'm serious when it comes to the important bit… your music).
So what are you waiting for? Drop me a mail or gimme a ring.
Cheers.
Glenn.
